What is Retinol?

Retinol is one of the best known skincare ingredients on the market. Retinol is derived from vitamin A, and is primarily used to treat mature looking skin concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone. Beyond being an effective anti-ager, the vitamin A derivative also targets breakouts for an overall clearer, pore-less complexion. It also has exfoliating properties and can improve skin elasticity.

Retinol molecules will go deep beneath the skin and help neutralize free radicals, and boosts the production of collagen and elastin which creates a plumping effect that can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The exfoliating effect that retinol has on the skin’s surface helps improve texture and tone for a flawless complexion!

There are a variety of over-the-counter retinol options that you can get at your local drug store, and then there are also really effective options like the medical grade products that can be found at CMC Medical Aesthetics.

Retinol and Acne

While retinol is sometimes used to help treat acne, severe acne is usually treated via a prescription retinoid like tretinoin or Retin-A.

Side Effects

Side effects of introducing a retinol into your routine for first-time users include redness, itching, and peeling, flaking skin. If you use too high a strength, or apply retinol with other active ingredients like AHA/BHA, Vitamin C, or others of high strength you may notice some sensitivity.

How to use Retinol

To lessen the side effects of starting a retinol, try using every second or third night, and then work your way up to using nightly. Apply a pea-sized amount to the skin every few nights until you work up your tolerance. Avoid using retinol around your lash line, corners of your nose, and corners of your mouth, as these areas are common for experiencing retinol irritation.

We recommend applying your retinol 10-20 minutes after washing your face, and not using more than one retinol product at a time. Once you’ve given your retinol a few minutes to absorb into your skin, you can apply your moisturizer to combat dryness and flaking.

How long does it take to work?

Retinols can take a few weeks to begin to work, and pending potency, over-the-counter retinol can take up to 6 months to notice results. Sometimes your skin may begin to look worse before it gets better. Try not to be discouraged, it takes consistent, dedicated use to see results!
