Needle vs. Cannula, what’s the best choice for dermal fillers?

Cannula

Cannulas are long, flexible, "hollow" tubes with a blunt tip. They allow injectors to place filler over larger areas through a single entry point. They provide less bruising and swelling, along with less risk of occulding blood vessels.

Because of their unique structure compared to sharp-tip needles, cannulas are preferable for wide treatment areas that need many sessions to fill. Cannulas are more maneuverable around delicate areas of the skin, have higher accuracy with dermal sites, and allow for a continuous flow of filler towards the site.

Needle

Needles are short, sharp and rigid. Needles are excellent for precision and detail work. Although, by puncturing the skin and tissues they can lead to a higher chance of bruising and swelling post-treatment.

Sharp tip needles are still the tool of choice for many aestheticians since they’re more precise and readily available. For localized filler sites or quick touch-ups, needles are still a practical and convenient option. Precision work is easier with a sharp-tip needle because of the small amount of filler required.
